The Study on the Influence of uniateral 3RD Molars on Crowding of Arch

Abstract
The subject for this study were 17 male patients and 33 female patients of Dept. of Orthodontics in Yonsei University dental hospital, who did not have dental history of 3rd molar extraction and yet had only one mandibular 3rd molar.
The mean age was 21.9 years, and the ages of subjects ranged for 14 years, which was the youngest, to 29 years which was the oldest. All the subjects had permanent dentition with fully erupted 2nd molars. We took no consideration into the molar
and
skeletal relationships. Also in selection of subjects, we chse ones who didnot have any history of congenital missing, extraction of teeth, anomaly of tooth form and size(macrodontia, microdontia), serious periodontal disease, and orthodontic
treatment.
Conventional orthopantomoram, and cephalometrics were used for evaluation. We decided the 3rd molar-abscent-side to be control side and 3rd molar-existing-side, test side.
There are many causative factors of crowding other than basic impalance between the size and form of teeth and dental arch : however, by comparing test and control side within one individual, we tried to rule out many other fostors and evaluate
only
effects 3rd molars under the same circumstances. on the 3rd molar existing side(p<0.05) : in other words, the 3rd molar was proved to be on factor of causing crowding.
2. As the 3rd molar develpment progressed significant difference in ALD and BAL was shown on the test side. This proves that the developmental stage of the 3rd molar and also cause crowding
3. No significant difference was shown in any other factors of 3rd molar
